Biography

Sandra L. Thompson is an American government official and seasoned financial regulator who served as the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) from June 2022 until January 2025. She was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden, confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and sworn in as Director after serving as Acting Director beginning in June 2021. Thompson made history as the first Black woman to lead the FHFA.

Before leading the FHFA, Thompson had a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in public service and financial regulation. She spent over 23 years at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), where she held various leadership roles, most recently as Director of the Division of Risk Management Supervision. In that role, she led the agency’s examination and enforcement programs for risk management and consumer protection, including during the financial crisis.

Thompson joined FHFA in 2013 as Deputy Director of the Division of Housing Mission and Goals, overseeing housing and regulatory policy, capital policy, financial analysis, fair lending, and mission activities for Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the Federal Home Loan Bank System.

A graduate of Howard University (BBA), Thompson has been a leading voice on expanding safe, sound, and equitable access to credit and affordable housing in the U.S. Throughout her tenure, she focused on strengthening mortgage market stability, promoting fair lending, and advancing the FHFA’s mission to serve all communities.
